.. A sometimes forgotten architectural detail in Southern California. Either we hang a piece of artwork, ie: the flatscreen, over it, or ignore it all together. Why wouldn't we? The amount of times we actually light it can probably be counted on two hands. I say the time has come to stop, and pay attention to your fireplace! Make it the center of the room again! I have been seeing some really clever and beautiful ideas, so scroll down and be inspired- and don't forget to tell us what you think!
Mirrors
Open your space by flanking your fireplace with some large scale mirrors. The ones below give the illusion of windows, but still bring light to the space. There are lots of different sizes and styles.
Don't have a mantle? Add one!
It's easier than ever to add a mantle these days. It's no longer necessary to add a formal one, and your space doesn't always call for such a large one. You can purchase floating shelves pretty easily, and some even come unfinished so you can use your custom color.
Art vs. The Mantle
While it's traditional to hang a piece of art above the mantle, try creating your own. Layer some of your favorite frames, add some treasures from your various travels, and some candlesticks to create a unique and intriguing mantle.
..And it's not just the mantle...
Take advantage of the surround! This is a great place to show some personality!
Lighting, Make it your own!
You don't have to decorate with the standard traditional sconce, play it up! The couple below used some draftsman lamps!
(I have been seeing this randomly, I expect to be seeing it a lot more.)
Don't use the fireplace? Fill it up!
This is a great idea if you have kids or animals you want to keep out of the fireplace.
Now, while I don't endorse using real antlers, there are a ton of realistic and funky faux antlers available. This look can also be achieved with some unique driftwood as well.
Architectural Detail, meet The Flatscreen.
Most have taken advantage of the large spot above the fireplace to house the t.v., which is a great use of space, but don't forget about the fireplace!
Hey, I use my Fireplace!
I realize that most do, in fact, use their fireplace. While most of these things still apply, check out this piece of art for inside a working fireplace!
